February 12, 2020 – Class Update

It looks like winter is taking a turn to spring here and there.  Both classes have been discussing things that we see, hear, and smell that tell us spring is approaching.  We have also been having a great time talking about maps! Such a fun theme that children can access through art, and play.

November 30, 2018 – Class Update

The preschool has been a busy place in the last few weeks!  It was so wonderful to talk with all of you at conferences about your children.  The Cricket class had a visit from a Portland Firefighter before break. He reminded us of the importance of knowing what to do if you hear a smoke alarm go off, and to have a family emergency plan and meeting place outside of the home (a neighbors yard perhaps).  The Bear class was visited this week by two Portland Police Officers. They got a chance to explore the police car, turning on lights and pushing buttons. Both classes asked many questions, to the delight of all the questions ranged from “What do you eat?” to “How do you catch a ghost?”

We will continue our community helper discussions next week as we talk about mail carriers and doctors.  The following week we will also be discussing stone soup.  The final day before winter break I will be asking families to bring in items for the kids to help make our own stone soup.  In addition to the soup I would love to have families bring bread or a desert to share.

Kindly,

Teacher Allisen

November 9, 2018 – Class Update

November has settled in and so has cooler weather.  Please be sure to send outer layers. I can’t guarantee they will wear them, but, I will do my best to have them at least start on.  If you have stray gloves and mittens we would love them for the mitten bag. We keep a bag at school with mismatched items for cold days.  The perfect place for those loose ones with no mate.

We have started a community helper/safety unit.  Currently we are talking about firefighters, and will expand into other community jobs in the next few weeks.  It is a great time to start working on kids learning phone number and address, as well as knowing parents full names.  Additionally doing fire drills at home so that kids know what the smoke alarm sounds like and what to do if it goes off.  Decide on a family meeting place outside and practice ways to exit your home.

Thank you for all you do for our community.

Kindly,

Teacher Allisen

September 27, 2018 – Class Update

What a week it has been!  Apple cider in the classroom was a huge success!  Everyone got a chance to help chopping apples and using the apple press.  An extra special thank you to Pastor David and the brave parents who helped with cider day!  A little more crazy, a lot more messy but so much fun, and well worth it all.

Next week we will continue with our next apple undertaking as we look at making apple juice with a juicer.  This will give us an opportunity to look at how the process is the same and different.

September 21, 2018 – Class Update

Happy Fall everyone!  Last Friday the Bear class had a sudden burst of excitement about apples.  Since then apples have been our focus. We have cut them open looking inside finding seed, blossom, stem and even a worm!  We have used our bodies to grow from a seed to tree with the wind in our branches. Used apples with paint for stamping and made applesauce.

Next week we will continue our apple exploration as we make apple cider!  This is where I need your help! It takes a lot of apples to press cider and I would love to have families bring in a variety for us to use.  We will be pressing cider on Wednesday and Thursday but would be happy to have apples start coming in earlier in the week.

With a beautiful fall weekend ahead many of you may be out walking.  If you see acorns, chestnuts, walnut shells, pine cones large and small, cool rocks, or other natural loose parts I encourage you to collect them for our classroom.  We use all of these natural loose parts in a variety of ways in the classroom and it is the time of year to stock up!

We have a great year ahead!  Have a wonderful weekend.

Kindly,

Teacher Allisen

August 29, 2018 – Class Update

The summer days are coming to the end and maybe, just maybe fall is in the air.  I am so excited to start the school year with all of you!

I can’t wait to have kids back in the classroom.  As I set things up and move things into place I keep trying to figure out what is missing.  It is missing little faces, smiles, giggles, paint, fingerprints, and the joy that only your kids can bring.  Looking forward to a fabulous year!
